It was trained on the GPT-2, 117M language model from OpenAI to analyze text and determine how likely a human-created content was.

The tool assigns probabilities to each word by comparing text inputs to what GPT-2 would have produced instead and highlights them using different colors.

What Are AI Content Detectors?

AI Content Detectors are software tools that use artificial intelligence to determine if a piece of text content is written by a human or a robot.

How Do AI Content Detectors Work?

AI content detectors work by recognizing specific patterns or characteristics of the input text content by comparing it with the data it was trained on.

It recognizes similarities in the input text’s structure, phrasing, and frequency and then assigns a probability score.

So, when it finds something that matches what it has learned, it will flag it as a positive match and classify the words or entire paragraph accordingly.

This process falls under NLP (Natural Language Processing) with machine learning or deep learning using neural networks to produce an artificially intelligent model that can take an input and give an output as a prediction.

Without going into too much detail, an AI model is trained like this:

Lewagon Natural Language Processing Overview Diagram
From my old Data Science notes.
  • Preprocessing: Basically, to clean up the text and make it look more presentable by removing symbols, inconsistent capitalizations, etc.
  • Vectorizing: Turning those cleaned text into numbers to feed into the machine learning models because most machine learning algorithms do not directly understand words.
  • Training: Now you take those numbers, run them through an algorithm like Multinomial Naive Bayes, and have a natural language processing model.
  • Predicting: Finally, you take a piece of text you want to test, throw it into the new model you have just trained, and it will predict whether it’s AI content.

Are AI Detection Tools Worth It?

You don’t want to create content blindly with AI marketing tools only to be penalized by Google in the future.

AI detection tools are definitely worth using to ensure that the content written by an AI tool or even freelance writers (because some of them use AI writers even when they tell you they don’t) don’t get flagged.

Besides, most of the tools on this list are free, so there is no excuse not to use them.

Why Is It Important To Detect AI Content?

By detecting AI content, we can ensure that the information we view and interact with is authentic and accurate.

Here are other practical applications:

  • Preventing Google from flagging AI content as spam.
  • Preventing employers from getting ripped off by writers who say their content is original.
  • Ensure that the writing makes sense and is logical.
  • It keeps the human’s creative juices flowing and prevents laziness.

What are the Limitations of AI Detector Tools?

The limitations of AI Detector Tools will always be the data it’s fed and trained on.

Because if the training data is not a good representation of the type of content, the tool will be analyzing, then the results are likely to be inaccurate.

AI Model Limitation Analogy

Imagine if you knew nothing, and I started by showing you pictures of different Chickens.

The word next to each image also says “Chicken.”

So now you have learned what a Chicken looks like without knowing any other kind of bird existed.

Now, if the following image I showed you were a duck, knowing only what a chicken is, you would think it’s similar and say it’s also a chicken.

Here are more limitations:

  • AI tools can only understand patterns and derive conclusions from them. They can have no concept of context, leading to false positives and negatives.
  • They may struggle to understand and detect more nuanced or subtle forms of content, such as sarcasm, irony, or satire.
  • Not all training data is publicly available, but sometimes it could be illegally scraped online, raising privacy, ethical or legal issues.
  • Definitely not a “let Jesus take the wheel” solution, so human oversight is still needed to review flagged content and make final decisions.
  • As AI systems are based on machine learning, they require continuous updates and maintenance to adapt to the changing nature of the content, which may require additional cost and effort.

Best AI Content Detectors (FAQ)

What Is The Best Free AI Detection Tool?

The best free AI detection tool is Content at Scale that uses multiple natural language processing models aside from OpenAI’s widely available GPT series.

Put the text through any of the AI Detectors I mentioned in this article, and you will get a score telling you the result.

Without it, it would be pretty difficult to tell them apart.

Are AI Content Detectors Accurate?

Yes, AI content detectors are mostly accurate, but never 100%. They can only give you the likelihood of it being human-written or AI-generated text.

Can Google Detect AI Content?

To Sum up

Alright, that’s a wrap.

No matter what industry you are in, you can stand to benefit from AI writing tools.

However, you can’t just publish AI-generated content without adding a human touch.

Using AI content detection tools, ensure you don’t take Google’s or any other search engine’s policies for granted.

Checking before posting will ensure that your articles are spam free and safe from future core updates from Google, should they take further action by clamping down on AI-generated content.

Love the energy on the blog, truly a great read.

Which one would you think is the best (performance, UI, feel etc) in your opinion?

    1. Hey Tracey!

I feel that overall Content at Scale is the best. In terms of accuracy, Originality.AI still had more accurate predictions but [email protected] still had some false positives/negatives.

[email protected] just recently had an update to their AI content detector and provided users with more metrics.

It now highlights text sections while showing predictability, probability, and pattern. The UI is also sleek and quick to give results.

Maybe you could do an accuracy, precision, and recall test 🙂
